Background
Welfare to Work
A key objective of the Australian Government is to maximise the ability of Australians to find work, particularly those who face severe barriers to work, to reduce welfare dependency, to support strong employment growth and the improved productive performance of enterprises in Australia.
The Australian Government funds a range of employment services to assist people with disability including Disability Employment Services (DES), Vocational Rehabilitation and Job Services Australia.
The Government also provides incentives to employers to encourage them to employ job seekers with disability through schemes such as the Workplace Modification Scheme, the Wage Subsidy Scheme and the Supported Wage Scheme.
Objectives of Disability Employment Services
Disability Employment Services is designed to assist job seekers with employment preparation, job search, job placement and post placement support.
The Disability Services Act (1986) provides the legislative framework for the delivery of the DES Programme. The objectives of the DES Programme are to provide high quality, specialist employment services that:
- enable job seekers with a disability to achieve sustainable employment to their maximum capacity
- promotes the capacity of people with a disability leading to improved employment opportunities and
- encourage innovation and continuous improvement in the provision of employment services
