Prior to 2002, FWS Kangaroo Island operated a popular car washing Supported Employment activity in Kingscote. It was well supported by the local community and provided part time employment for between three and six clients coordinated by one part time support worker and a part time manager. At that stage FWS was not active in Open Employment however, outlet growth and a new focus for the local operation saw FWS become well known in this field in 2003/2004.

In 2005, the Kangaroo Island Outlet were operating at full capacity with the majority of clients engaged in part time or casual Open Employment. With this development the expertise of the KI staff were moving from job seeking and work readiness preparation towards vocational planning, on-the-job support and capacity building through re-training and personal development. The Outlet now employs a Manager, two Employment Coordinators and a Casual.

Several small businesses on the Island currently employ two or more FWS clients making it possible to create both a disability-friendly environment, a good level of employer support and time/cost effective placement of support workers in the workplace.
